Respecting Copyright

It is not reasonable to claim rights under copyright law while denying the rights of others under the same law. The OFF System utilizes a network wide standard system of technical measures to protect the rights of all parties.

OFF Corps' Copyright Management Information Registry enables copyright holders to quickly inform every node in the OFF network of the copyright status (§ 106) of their respective works. Once informed of the CMI, OFF nodes utilize a standard system of built-in technical measures (§ 1201) to block infringing user actions.

Along with respecting the rights of copyright holders, OFF's standard technical measures pay equal respect to fair (§ 107) and otherwise legal use rights of citizens. OFF does this using the same system developed by law makers for physical media.

Having been notified of the copyright status of a work, any user may personally assert their ensuing use will be one which is "fair" or otherwise permitted by law. Fair uses include making copies for criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research. Other legal uses include reading electronic texts, watching visual works and listening to audio works.
