Page 1 of 2 Note: I got some great feedback from Steely telling my that this page was obscure and condescending. I tend to agree with him, so I'm going to rewrite it.
The proposed direction follows: What follows now might make you think that I have gone mad, so, before the text, and because of your age ;-) I want to quote what you said earlier today in the IRC. In your own words:
// ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - on the OFF Corps site, I don't want to go into lots of technical detail about the OFF System itself
- What I was tying to do was to stress what OFF does to support anonymity, Privacy, Access ... WITHOUT relating that to all the cary bits of P2P
- ... to relate that to common everyday things we do on the regular web Since to me, that is the conversation that needs to be started
- Using the OFF System is like using the web. Except there is no single physical web server // ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And, as I said, I started from this point. So, the new page "The OFF System" could look like this:
First off: the OFF System is not about filesharing, though it has some similarities. Though you *can* use the OFF System like filesharing, its purpose is completely different. For an in-depth discussion about the nuts and bolts see this page
(Note to capi: dont say "use OFF for filesahring", say "like filesharing")
The times where storage space was physically tied to your PC at home are long gone. We are used to use the whole Internet as storage:
- you upload your pictures and renders to online-galleries - you show your photographs at photo communities - you let watch the whole world your home made videos at places like YouTube - you store your documents at Xdrive for easy access - and publish your thoughts and comments on your homepage
Of course, not all content is meant to be viewed and accessed by everyone. Therefore, you usually store your data on protected areas. This way, your private Party Photos can be seen only by the people you want to see them.
In short: as long as the content is yours, you are the only one to decide, what and where will be published to whom.
However, websites can be hacked, passwords broken, providers, communities and companies can stop their services, shut down and close the doors.
Here is where OFF comes in to fill the gap and expand your number of choices, keeping your privacy, anonimity and access possibilities.
### end of text
At this point, we can link to one or more sub-pages, for example:
- what can be stored? - how is it stored? - how is it published? - how can you determine who has access to your data?
and on these pages we can go in depth, at whichever level of detail you want, but keeping the direction from the "main page" above.
I am well aware, that this changes the direction of the page, but I think, this direction fits what you had in mind. What is important from my point of view, is that we get rid of all the "nodes, blocks and meanings" stuff, which of course is important, but sounds very close to "anonymous filesharing". We started on the main page with peoples rights and privacy, so let´s stick to that and let us explain everything from THIS point of view. The geeks can be pleased at another place. Original Page Follows. Will be removed.
