Copyright—what you should know.

We are big fans of copyright law. However, copyright law goes far beyond the sound bites from section 106 espoused by the media industry. Copyright and other "intellectual property" laws were created by the public in order to directly benefit the public.

We are proud to publish articles which highlight sections of copyright law that are hugely important to all citizens but which are seldom discussed in the media.

Fair Use—§ 107
Libraries
—§ 108
First-Sale—§ 109
Copying Music—§ 1008
But don't take our word for it. Read the law yourself. You will find that along with the section protecting the rights of publishers, there are equally important sections that limit publishers rights in order to protect the rights of consumers and others citizens.
§ 106. Exclusive rights in copyrighted works
§ 107. Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use
§ 108. Limitations on exclusive rights: Reproduction by libraries and archives
§ 109. Limitations on exclusive rights: Effect of transfer of particular copy or phonorecord
§ 1008. Prohibition on certain infringement actions

Note: Articles linked here focus on the above sections but realize that many other sections, (including 110, 111, 112, 117, 119, 121, 122) also limit the rights granted by section 106.
